body butter

Since I was a child I have had EXTREMELY sensitive skin. I get a rash if anything slightly rubs my skin the wrong way, the minute the seasons change I get eczema, and I am pretty much allergic to every tree, plant, grass, pollen out there. That being said I have tried a TON of different lotions. Many name brands out there. Now, I am sure there might be some brand I haven’t tried that is completely natural and amazing, but it probably also costs an arm and a leg.

Unfortunately, my kids suffer the same skin issues. As my journey of natural projects progressed, I came across many recipes for lotion and thought I would go ahead and give it a try. It’s hard to use anything else now!

There are so many ways you can do it and I am sure everyone has their preference. This is a recipe I have found that is amazing and works AWESOME! No eczema outbreaks or dry cracked skin! I have put links to where I get my ingredients, remember to always get the unrefined and purest form.

Ok… so this is still easy to make but does take some more time.

// Body Butter

::What you’ll need

– 2 cups Shea Butter (I buy African Shea Butter from Amazon here)

– 1 cup Coconut Oil (I buy Carrington Farms from Costco)

– Carrier Oils (I use a mixture but you don’t have to you can use one)

1/4 cup Almond Oil

1/4 cup Jojoba Oil

1/8 cup Olive Oil

– 1/4 cup Colloidal Oatmeal (Optional-It is good for eczema or itchy skin. I have made it without a few times. I buy mine here)

– 60+ drops depending on scent desired of essential oil (I have used lavender, ylang ylang and patchouli, but want to try some more. I really don’t like it super scented anyway since the whole family uses ut and Garrett doesn’t want to smell like a flower 🙂 I buy mine here)

::Things to remember

– Keep it 75 solid (Shea Butter/Coconut Oil) 25 liquid (carrier oil)

– You can use whatever essential oils you want just make sure they are skin friendly. Lavender, Sweet Orange, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus are popular.

– You can use whatever oils for the carrier oil (jojoba, almond, olive, etc.) that you want. I like to do a mixture.

– The cooling period is important for the body butter to set or it won’t whip correctly. You DON’T want it to harden fully so make sure you really watch this step.

– This will be slightly oily when you apply but will soak into skin. I usually put on right away when I get out of shower and let it soak while I finish getting ready. However, I have been in a hurry before and had to just put clothes on right away. With this recipe I have not had it stain or ruin any of MY clothes. Still be careful since you are dealing with oils.

::How to

1. Put the shea butter and coconut oil in pot/jar that you can put over boiling water. You do not want to put oils in a pan on direct heat.

2. Melt

4. Place in freezer for around 20 min. When you see it starting to harden and it get “milky” take it out. Scrape off the sides into the bowl.
