essential oils

For some reason I always thought essential oils were all hype and that they didn’t really work. Boy was I wrong! Now, I am NO expert in essential oils and my essential oil (EO) journey has really just begun in 2012. However, with my OCD researching skills I have spent hours looking into everything about EO and the benefits. Still don’t know everything but I am enjoying finding new uses and information.

SO MUCH FUN! Let me just say God is so genius and creative and has literally given us so many incredible things naturally to use for SO much.

There is a lot to know about EO and especially to make sure you are using them correctly and effectively.

Here is a great article on comparisons of many popular essential oils. She didn’t compare the company I use but it is still interesting.

Great Essential Oil Showdown

Above is a great website that has NO affiliation with any of the companies and do 3rd party tests on oils. They will post results about purity of the oil. Edens Garden has been a part of tests done by them. Visit the page and review the information. You will see the major companies out there did not pass the Peppermint Oil test for multiple reasons. Edens garden was tenths of a point from passing in 1 category, as I researched causes, it was most likely cause of soil and nature conditions. They scored perfect everywhere else and for the money, definitely one of the BEST oil companies out there!

**ALWAYS check and research the appropriate ages for oils and children. Some oils are NOT safe for young children or pregnant/nursing women

// What essential oils do I use?

There are so many companies out there and I am not here to say which ones are good/bad, just some facts to look at. I have researched MANY of the companies and read review after review about them. I even contacted some and requested information. I have read extensively on what needs to be considered when buying essential oils. Below are a few links for you to look at and read more info on if you are interested. There are great companies out there, for me however, based on cost, quality, and information I have acquired, I use Edens Garden.

Edens Garden

I would start with buying Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint Oil. They are the most versatile and easy to use. I actually bought a starter kit ($20 for 6) that included some (not lemon), as well as a few others here. Frankincense is also becoming one of my favorites!

*I have NO affiliation with them or receive any compensation through them. In fact, the reason their prices are so affordable is the very fact there are no middle men. I have communicated with them extensively. Their oils are 1st distillation, 100% pure and the company has been open about the certifications when requested. You can purchase through the website or on Amazon.

// What do you use them for?

Well, this list could go on and on forever!

I have just started using them and have listed below what I PERSONALLY have tried. Since I am fairly new to this, I am finding new uses everyday and will continue to add as I use them for more things. I follow some blogs from others that use them to always get new ideas!

I have included links to other sites that explain other uses. Please read my disclaimer before trying anything below.

**ALWAYS check and research the appropriate ages for oils and children. Some oils are NOT safe for young children or pregnant/nursing women. HERE is a “guide” for oils and pregnancy. Again, always consult a professional if you have questions or are not sure if an oil is safe to use.

:: Toothpaste– Peppermint Oil See my recipe here

:: GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)– My husband Garrett suffered from this daily as well as heartburn and acid reflux. The doctor wanted to put him on Prilosec. Before he did I started researching and found essential oils could help. Drinking one drop of Peppermint Oil in a glass of water daily has eliminated the issue. He also drinks 2 oz of George’s Aloe Vera daily and has no symptoms.

:: Stomach Flu– My son had the stomach flu. His stomach had sharp pains, he was pale and weak and throwing up. I rubbed jojoba oil (this is a carrier oil) on his tummy and then rubbed 2-3 drops of peppermint oil over his stomach and the jojoba oil. I then added a drop of peppermint oil to a cup of warm water and had him take a few sips. Do not drink a lot, not because of the peppermint, but too much water can induce vomiting. Within 15 min. of this he was fine as if nothing had ever happened! Peppermint calms the stomach and digestive system.

:: Lotion/Body ButterLavender Oil See my recipe here

:: Cough Syrup This recipe works great! View recipe HERE

:: Cuts and Scrapes I got a nasty “paper cut” from aluminum on the tip of my finger. Sliced it good, like a knife. After about a day it started to get really red and tender. I put some lavender oil on it directly (or neat) and then a bandaid. Within 30 minutes the tenderness was reduced to hardly anything and the redness gone! Since then, I have put it on a few other cuts and some of the kids scrapes. It can sting a little but it relieves the pain quickly. I am a fan!

:: Glass Cleaner Lemon Oil & Sweet Orange See my recipe here

:: Vacuum Freshener few drops of lavender or lemon on a cotton ball and put inside vacuum bag (we have a Kirby)

:: Hand Sanitizer- Those store bought ones are filled with nasty chemicals. Make your own HERE!

:: Shoe Freshener few drops of lemon on cotton ball, rub inside shoes and leave in shoe until they are to be worn. This worked GREAT on my stinky Toms!

:: Air Freshener- I add a few drops of lemon or lavender to water in a spray water bottle (chemical safe or glass only) and spray around the room. I have sprayed on couch and rugs (always test your furniture before doing so). It is a great, easy and quick way to get your house smelling so fresh and clean! During flu season or if someone is sick in your house. Put a few drops of thieves (see below) blend and water and spray your house down. This stops the virus from spreading person to person!

:: Homemade Daily Shower Spray
1/2 Cup Rubbing Alcohol
1/2 Cup Witch Hazel
1 Cup Filtered Water
1 TSP Salt
10-20 Drops of a mix or pick one of the following:
Lemon, Lemongrass, Orange, Bergamot, Tea Tree, Thieves
*I personally do a mix of Lemon, Orange & Bergamot

– Mix all ingredients except oils first in a glass or chemical safe plastic bottle. Then add oils. Shake well. Use after every shower to prevent mildew and mold.

:: Toilet Deodorizer/Cleaner
I use 3-5 drops of Lemongrass in my toilet to clean, sanitize and deodorize. Add drops and scrub with toilet brush. Leave in water. Any of the above oils also work well, I just love the smell of lemongrass for my toilets in the bathrooms.

:: Kitchen Disinfectant & Freshener- A few drops of lemongrass or lemon in the sink- take scrub brush or dish brush and spread around. Not only disinfects the brush but cleans the sink better than ANY chemical cleaner. Gets rid of all yucky smells and freshens your whole house right up. I do this before company comes over and always get asked why my house smells so fresh. The aromatherapy aspect is great also 🙂

:: Insect Repellent/Bug Spray Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lavender in water and spritz over exposed areas. You can also spray your dog and it is a natural flea and tick repellent. They are actually deadly to insects and rodents which is why it repels them. I spray baseboards around house and it kills spiders for days after if they come in contact.

:: Headache-  Recently I had a major dull headache all day. I thought it would be the perfect chance to try the essential oils. I made sure to eat and that didn’t help so I knew I was going to need to take medicine if they didn’t work. I rubbed peppermint and lavender oil on my temples and across my forehead. Within around 15-20 min my headache was gone!

:: Sore Throat My youngest had 2 days of fever and ear infections. He started to say his throat was sore and when I looked it had white spots, which looked like the start of strep. So, since I knew I couldn’t take him until morning I decided to try essential oils. I rubbed Eucalyptus, Lavender and Rosemary behind his ears and all around his neck and chest, then bottom of feet. He slept through the whole night and when he woke up he was fine. I continued it every 4-6 hours all day the next day and he was great within 24hrs! I know strep is something you don’t mess with and had he not responded to the oils I would have taken him in to doctor, but it was amazing that they worked so well this time around.

:: Allergy Remedies- Suffering from allergies? Read my post here and get the recipes!

MAKE YOUR OWN THIEVES OIL! It works amazing! I use it to protect against sickness, disinfect, and healing. Click HERE to view recipe. The author uses DoTerra Oils but I use and recommend Edens Garden, they are excellent quality and much cheaper!
